Why do teeth become dull?

There can be several reasons why teeth become yellow or dull. Our diet can have a serious impact on oral health and the color of teeth. Proper maintenance of oral hygiene is absolutely essential for teeth to remain healthy and bright. Consumption of excess cola, coffee, wine and tea can leave pigments on enamel layer to mask the actual color of teeth. Dental infection and formation of plaque and tarter can mask the natural color of teeth. Certain antibiotics such as tetracycline are known to discolor teeth in some patients. Yellowing of teeth can also be found in patients who suffer from bruxism or people whose teeth enamel is worn down to an extent where dentin’s color is reflected over teeth surface.

Teeth whitening – How it is done?

In office teeth whitening procedure is very effective in improving the shade of teeth. During the visit, our dentist firstly clears plaque and tarter and checks for signs of decay. Problems like tooth decay may have to be treated before going ahead with whitening process. Once the teeth are ready to undergo whitening the dentist takes images of teeth and uses a shade scale to compare the color. The gums are protected using a gel and the teeth are kept dry during the course. A whitening agent, hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, is applied over teeth. The whitening agent can enter the porous enamel layer and undergo oxidation to clear stain. To accelerate the process of whitening, a special light may be shined over teeth during the course. Each sitting may take about 40 minutes. Patients can quickly see the change in color of teeth once the procedure is completed.
