What are dental implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots which are designed to act as a foundation to dental crowns, dentures or other dental prostheses that replace missing teeth. They are made of titanium or zirconium. These materials have the property to bond with supporting bone tissues. The bond that is formed between the jawbone and implant gives the restoration high stability. The process where the implant integrates with the bone is called Osseointegration. The success of our dental implant surgeries performed for our patients from Yorba Linda, Placentia, Brea, Fullerton, Anaheim and surrounding communities depends on solely on Osseointegration and how the implanted teeth are maintained.

Teeth loss and dental implants

Teeth loss can occur due to various causes which include infection, injury and diseases. Tooth decay and gum infection are among the few common causes for teeth loss. Patients require immediate dental attention when a tooth is lost because of decay or gum disease. The dentist takes steps to treat the infection and stop it from spreading further. The restoration process starts only after the infection is treated.

Teeth loss may also occur because of an accidental injury. If the tooth is not restored the soft gum tissues and the supporting bone resorbs with time. The teeth nearby may tend to get pushed towards the gap created from tooth loss. This can lead to occlusion problems. Due to increased food lodgment in the gap, there can be higher chances of gum infection.

Dental implants can address all these issues. The implant is designed to perfectly restore the root of a lost tooth. It bonds with the bone tissues and becomes an integral part of the bone and hence prevents the supporting bone from shrinking. Furthermore, the crown that replaces the lost tooth prevents the teeth nearby from shifting positions.

Dental implant – Restoration procedure

Almost any patient can get dental implant as long as he/she has healthy jawbone. Patients who are undergoing radiation therapy in the head region may have to consult the dentist about the suitability of the restoration. During the first consultation, our general dentist takes X-rays and checks oral health to see if dental implant surgery can be performed. Once our dentist confirms that surgery can be performed, a treatment plan is scheduled and explained to patients. The surgery is done with the aid of local anesthesia. Incision is made in the gums and drills are used to create a bony recess in the jawbone. The implant can be torqued in place using special instruments. Once the implant is inserted in the bone, the gums are sutured back. The implant is left to heal in the bone. This may take few months. During the second visit, the dentist fixes an abutment over implant and takes impressions of teeth to get the crown fabricated. Once the crown is ready to use it is bonded or screwed over the abutment. The team explains patients how to maintain dental implants. With proper care, dental implants are known to last for decades.

Apart from Yorba Linda, our dental office accepts other cities such as Placentia, Brea, Fullerton, and Anaheim. We even have patients that live in other states that still fly back to see us, come see why for yourself!
