Malocclusion and oral health
The upper and lower teeth come together in a bite. The way in which the teeth from two dental arches come together is called an occlusion. Any deviation from the normal bite is called malocclusion or bad bite. This condition can lead to a number of oral health problems. Following are some problems that can arise from malocclusion.
- Difficulty maintaining oral hygiene can lead to dental infection
- The smile may look less attractive
- Reduced chewing efficiency
- Teeth wear
- TMJ problems in more complex cases
- Invisalign® Treatment
Invisalign® is a product of Align Technology. The system has a series of aligners that are custom-made to straighten teeth. The clear aligners are made of BPA free plastic. They have a smooth finishing and are virtually invisible. Patients have to remove the aligners when eating/drinking anything apart from water. It is easier to maintain oral hygiene when living with aligners as compared to dental braces.
The first visit to our dental office will involve the thorough oral examination, which is followed by a questionnaire. Our dentist makes a note of what patients expect from the treatment. We check the teeth to see if Invisalign® can bring about the necessary changes. On confirmation that Invisalign® is the right solution, our dentist explains the treatment plan to the patient. Impressions, images and X-rays of teeth are taken. The data is scanned and converted to electronic form and sent to Invisalign® technicians. Through CAD CAM, digital models of the treatment plan are created. This shows the movement of teeth in various stages. The plan is sent to our office and on approval, the lab starts fabrication of the aligners. A series of aligners are fabricated in the lab. Each pair is exchanged with another after every two weeks. Patients should wear the aligners for about 22 hours of a day. Our dentist checks the progress of treatment every 6 weeks. The treatment may take 12-18 months depending on the complexity of the condition. On completion of the treatment, patients can see a transformation in the smile. Retainers may be recommended for use after the treatment.
